A Saint is someone who has lead a life united to God by His grace and is now in heaven. AKA Everyone who is in heaven is a saint or 'holy one.' The saints that are canonized by the Church are people whose lives were publicly recognized as holy and have miracles attributed to their intercession after their death. There are many saints that are not officially canonized by the Church, that is why we celebrate All Saints Day to remember their hidden lives of holiness that were seen by God alone.
When you receive the Sacrament of Confirmation you are being called and consecrated, or set apart, by God. In the Bible we see many instances of God calling ordinary people, consecrating them, and giving them a new name. In the Book of Genesis, God called Abram to be the Father of Many Nations and changed his name to Abraham. In the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus called Saul and once he believed and followed Christ, Saul was given the name Paul.
As you prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, know that God is calling you to be consecrated to Him. When you choose your Confirmation Saint, you will be 'called' by this 'new name' when your Sponsor presents you to the Bishop, and to the Church, at Confirmation.
Choosing a saint, who has walked on the same earth and persevered through many similar sins, temptations, and struggles you have or will encounter in the future, is a blessing to help guide you in your spiritual life. Don't just choose the first saint that pops up on your saint search on google, but actually find a saint that resonates with you personally! Make sure to choose saints that are officially Beatified (Have a title of Blessed) and/or Canonized by the Roman Catholic Church.
If you need help or have any questions about your saints please contact me! I look forward to reading about which saints you're interested in!
