I am signing this petition to urge the city to support the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Nevada and Platte Avenues to increase public safety as part of the Platte Ave Corridor Study.
From 2015-2019, 21 out of 25 crashes at Nevada and Platte Avenues were caused by left turns, a roundabout would alleviate this problem and not rely on drivers noticing another sign to avoid dangerous left turns.
We have lost too many people due to the outdated design of this intersection, most recently Isadore Michael Romero, 67 on Sunday, April 2nd, 2023. According to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts reduce fatalities by 90%, and injuries by 76%. Furthermore a roundabout would improve the look of the intersection by placing the statue in the midst of a green space instead of being offset by pavement.
This is a common sense change and would vastly improve this intersection and the entire downtown. It is long past time that we address the statue in the middle of the road and the Platte Avenue Corridor Study offers us an opportunity to remedy this long standing issue.

Background on whether a roundabout is feasible: “Nevada sees about 20,000 vehicles a day and Platte about 14,000," a single-lane roundabout can handle approximately 20,000–26,000 vehicles per day, while a two-lane design supports 40,000 to 50,000. It may even only need one lane if we don't design only for peak use.)
