Genome Hackers Camp Application 2022
Thank you for your interest in our program! We are excited to see you in person this year and hope to get to do some neat science with you.

Genome Hackers is a hands-on science and coding summer camp for high school girls and gender minorities that introduces participants to basic computer programming and bioinformatics tools. Genome Hackers is run by graduate students in the Genome Sciences department at the University of Washington. We hope to show students what it is like to be a researcher in a lab and we have designed lots of hands-on lab and computational experiments. As a camp in the summer time, we try to keep it low-stress - no homework!

During camp, you will:
- Work with a set of genes that are common among many species in the animal kingdom
-       Get exposure to different model organism systems that we use in genetics
- Learn tools that are used to understand how genes compare across species
- Develop basic programming skills (great for beginners!)
- Use common bioinformatics tools that you can use at home
- Discuss ethics in science
- Learn how to design and present scientific projects

Applicant requirements:
- High school student (starting 9th-12th grade this fall; students starting college in the fall will also be  considered)
- Identify as female or a gender minority
- Excited to learn more about biology, genetics, and computer science

When is the application due?
Please submit your application by July 1st at 11:59 PM PDT. If there are still spots available, we will extend this deadline and continue to accept applications until the remaining spots are filled.

When is camp?

Experience Questions: The following 2 questions (questions 9 and 10) are for us to gauge what types of topics need to be covered in the Genome Hackers camp! Please be honest about your experiences - your answers here will not affect the application decision!
9) Which of these classes have you taken in school? (check all that apply) *
Required

If you are accepted, you must commit to participate fully in our camp!  We do not have the capacity to accept all of our amazing applicants, so please do not take the opportunity to learn away from another student by missing days/lessons from our virtual camp. Part of the camp involves group work, so all lessons are important or your team may not be able to complete their project. If you are accepted and can no longer attend please let us know ASAP! *
Thank you for applying! You are able to revisit your application and edit your responses until the application deadline (July 1st, 11:59 PM PDT)
