One of the reasons Jefferson County initiates the Growing and Changing unit in 5th grade is because it is felt that these students are developed and mature enough to handle the curriculum. Additionally, the 5th grade team does feel it beneficial to advise parents and students of the expectations. During this Growing and Changing science unit, we are aware that some students will not fully understand what is considered appropriate behavior and what is not. Therefore, the teachers will begin the unit on the first day addressing these issues and setting clear expectations with the students. From this point on, teachers will use their discretion regarding disruptive behavior. Teachers will make it clear that students may not disrupt the class with inappropriate conduct. A level of maturity is expected during class discussions and activities. Expected behaviors are listed below.
Demonstrate self-control
Questions and comments are appropriate
Students are not to use Google to search for answers to their questions
Respectful of other people’s comments and questions
All comments and topics are to be addressed during class, not with peers via Google Chat or Meet
If a student is unable to meet these expectations he/she will receive a verbal warning on the first offense. Upon the second offense, the student will meet with administration and a note will be sent home to parents. The third offense will result in the removal from class for the rest of the unit. The removed student will be required to complete an independent unit of study about the systems of the body.
By opting your student into the Growing & Changing unit, you are agreeing to these expectations. Please reach out to your student’s homeroom teacher with questions.
