Ashley Fure's "Filament" was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic to kick off their 2018 season. It was an important time for the orchestra: they had just hired a new chief conductor and wanted to begin this new era in their history with a suitably impressive new composition. What do you think of Ashley's piece and do you think it was a worthwhile investment for them? *
On the same concert, the NY Phil also performed a piano concerto by Beethoven and another piece on this week's listening, Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring". Without ever breaking eye contact, Daniel Gelernter offers a withering review of Fure's piece. In particular, he compares her piece (unfavorably) to the "simulated barbarism" of The Rite of Spring. For better or worse, what do you make of Gelernter's comments? *
