The dedication of a child could more properly be viewed as a dedication of parents. A dedication to the purpose of bringing their child to an understanding of the Word of God. Their commitment to presenting the truth of God’s Word to their child so that their child will be able to come to the place where he or she places trust in Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior.

Child Dedication is further, a recognition of the fact that every child is a “heritage of the Lord.”  Psalm 127:3. A child is God’s gift to the parents. A gift of trust that is intended to be nurtured and admonished. The end result of our commitment being an individual who glorifies God.

Just as Hannah brought Samuel to the temple to dedicate him to the Lord, and Mary and Joseph presented Jesus to His heavenly Father, so too parents present their “gift from God” to Him and themselves as stewards of God’s trust. This dedication says publicly what parents have already said privately to God.
