GrowNYC Zero Waste Schools Support
GrowNYC Zero Waste Schools (ZWS) is excited to work with schools to help successfully restart Curbside Composting (Organics Collection) this year!

Since 2010, GrowNYC ZWS has developed model recycling programs and designed unique and engaging educational materials for use at public schools throughout NYC. Working in partnership with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) Office of Sustainability, and the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability, GrowNYC ZWS provides on-the-ground support to NYC public schools.

Our programing has been instrumental in increasing recycling and composting and recycling rates in the largest school system in the United States and introducing the next generation of New Yorkers to the importance and the practices of waste reduction and recycling. Each school we partner with receives site visits, remote visits, training for teachers, student education, special events, action plans, and technical support to ensure schools are not only sorting recyclables, trash and food scraps correctly, but students and staff are aware of the larger issues surrounding waste and taking actions to reduce waste.

Program Overview
GrowNYC ZWS will provide each participating school with six weeks of support to ensure they are able to sort mealtime waste in the places where students are eating - cafeterias, classrooms and outdoor spaces. Our program theme, Student Advocacy through Waste Audit, is designed to help your students become advocates by learning about our waste crisis, conducting waste audits and designing and executing data-informed environmental actions. Participating schools will be assigned a dedicated Outreach Coordinator who will work collaboratively with administration, staff and students to bolster recycling and composting by offering:

   -> Waste sorting station set up guidance
   -> Custodial and OFNS staff training
   -> Professional learning workshops for teachers
   -> Classroom lessons and activities
   -> Guided Waste Audit
   ->Student leadership development
   -> And more!

Space is limited! We can only work with a select number of schools for each session.

Session 1: September 20 - October 29  -  FULL!
