UC Senate Faculty Pledge of Solidarity with Lecturer Colleagues (Only sign if you are Senate Faculty!!!)

BACKGROUND:
The University of California is dependent on the 6800 lecturers it employs: they teach one-third of undergraduate hours across the system, and on some campuses more than half. Three out of four lecturers work on short-term contracts with no job stability, no fair and consistent evaluation process, and no contractual assurance that they'll be considered for renewal. Their median annual salary is $19,067, even as UC campuses are located in regions with some of the highest costs of living in the country. Most departments would not be able to mount their curricula without the skilled labor of these dedicated educators.

The quality of undergraduate education at the University of California depends upon ALL of its faculty, lecturers included. Our lecturer colleagues’ precarious working conditions are our students’ learning conditions.

For the first time in over 20 years, and after 2 years of negotiations, our lecturer colleagues, represented by UC-AFT, have voted with an overwhelming majority of 96% to authorize a strike. As Senate faculty, we stand in solidarity with them.

PLEDGE:
I pledge to stand in solidarity with my lecturer colleagues in one or more of the following ways (check all that apply):

Commitments of General Support for Lecturers (check all that apply)

I will sign up to make a public comment in solidarity with my lecturer colleagues at the UC Regents’ September meeting (9/29, 9/30).

I will attend a Faculty Association meeting to learn more about the lecturers’ working conditions and why they have voted to strike.

I will join the lecturers’ Informational Picket on my campus for at least one hour on October 13 or 14, 10AM-2PM.

Commitments of Non-Retaliation (check all that apply)

I will not retaliate against striking lecturers and will speak out to oppose any retaliation I witness against lecturers who have the right to fight for better working conditions without fear of non-reappointment.

I will call on UC management not to retaliate against or dock the pay of Senate faculty who follow their conscience and exercise their rights of free association and free expression by honoring the lecturers’ picket line should they go out on strike.

Commitments Not To Undermine the Strike (check all that apply)

I will not take action of any kind that would undermine the lecturers’ strike.
