Order Form Tutorial
For a full version of this with Timeline shortcuts, see: https://youtu.be/cktDMupd8No

Note: many of the items on the order form used in this tutorial have changed. The current order form has the up to date items and prices.
Boot Warmer Kit
As seen in our Youtube video, S07E04. This kit is a partially assembled version of the components shown in the video (requires about 5 minutes of sewing to fasten the switch to the cuff). It is meant to be used with an existing set of boots, worn on the ankle above the boot, and has a 22" cord that connects the ankle cuff to the footbed. It requires the end user to sew the silicone power switch onto the cuff, and acquire their own batteries and charger (obtaining free 18650 batteries by harvesting them from power tool and computer battery packs is recommended). The battery case holds 3 18650 cells in series (cannot be seen in this picture because it is inserted in the sleeve in the ankle cuff) and allows for batteries to be changed out in the field to facilitate all day operation on high heat. The PET footbed can be driven at 2 amps  achieve temperatures of over 200F.  CAUTIONS: not suitable for use by individuals who suffer from dementia, peripheral neuropathy conditions (EG: diabetes), children, or the elderly.  This kit includes both the left and right foot.  Please refer to video (https://youtu.be/UCu_5nTYGLw) for more detailed information on the features and use of this item prior to making a purchasing decision.

6 bank 18650 charger
If you look on Amazon, there are a number of chargers for 18650 cells to choose from. The problem with the cheaper ones lay in the charging algorithm, and their charging capacity. Some of them have a charge rate that is so low, it would literally take you days to charge 6 cells. Can be used with a phone charging cable (micro USB). This one is small on curb appeal, and big on form factor.

This is what we liked about it:
1: Uses a 4056 chip. The 4056 is a CMOS quad bilateral switch that can be used for a variety of applications. In this application it shines because it has low power consumption and high input impedance
2: Is rated at 30 Watts and can charge each cell with up to 1A of current
3: Multiple connection ports for power supply: DC5.5*2.1/MICRO USB/ interface or wiring block direct input
Note: our version of this does not have the XT60 connector as seen on the lower right corner of the PCB below. This item does not ship with batteries.

Catalyst Pad
1 Platinum Catalyst Pad, approx 16 sq in. (rebuild approx 25 standard catalyst heads). 1% pure platinum precipitated onto safil substrate to form porous catalyst laminate.  The average pad thickness is 8mm. Catalyst: Do not breath dust from particles, wash hands after handling (appropriate tweezers recommended). How much catalyst you place in a spring is a subjective preference. In a large spring such as an S-Boston or Jon-e GI, pad size of 1.25x1.25" can be used to fill the 145C spring, and 1.5x1.25" the 165F spring. In a Zippo a pad size of 1.25x.5" is recommended for nominal temp (135F), and 1.25x1" is recommended for maximum heat (165F). Make a note if you want more than 1 pad. 2 Pads are discounted 10% and 3 pads 15%.

Carbon Felt Pad
Material grade: 300gsm, 3mm, 60 sq inch pads (approx 10" x 6") can be cut into 6" x 3/4" strips and used for repacking or rebuilding a complete handwarmer reservoir (yield is about 14 strips, generally done for odor mitigation, or replacing old, charred, and contaminated cotton packing), Individual strips can be used to protect the top of the cotton (from charring) in all your handwarmers (Use multiple layers if you remove the old charred cotton packing before inserting the carbon felt and you need to build the packing material up higher. We use double layer when modifying the Red Star for example.). Each price increment adds 60 sq inches, EG: $5.91 means you are ordering 60 sq inches, and $8.92 means you are ordering 120 sq inches in total.

Empty Spring (Standard size, 9mm diameter)
Update: Some buyers have noticed we no longer offer springs that are pre-loaded with catalyst. The reason to discontinue them grew over time. 1: We found it time consuming to fill them. 2: Each spring can hold a different density of material depending on how hot the user wants the handwarmer to be. 3: Springs that contain catalyst have to be sealed into straws to protect them during shipping, then the straws heat sealed to hold them in. This is an unnecessary and time consuming process which resulted in a higher price for the end user. To facilitate the transition to the end user filling her own springs, we offer the appropriate tweezers (so you do not steal your spouse's. You are not using her eyebrows as a hand warmer after all), catalyst, different sizes of springs, and have an instructional video on the procedure.

These springs have been selected based on criteria for composition of the metals (heat and corrosion factors), and the wire diameter (too thick and airflow is restricted, too thin and they disintegrate due to heat and corrosion), and they deform. Too long and the coils compress too much to allow for optimal interstitial spacing to promote maximum exothermic reaction.

The 'standard' springs are a universal fit for all regular sized liquid fuel handwarmers such as the the Jon-e, Peacock, Zippo, Whitby, Phoenix, and offshore clones such as Butterfly, etc. Larger, non standard handwarmers such as Joe-Giant (AKA 'GI'), and S-Boston use a different size which are also available below (we do not consider the larger of the 2 Zippo's to be a 'Large' handwarmer, it uses a standard spring).

These springs can be stuffed with catalyst to rebuild old handwarmer catalyst heads. All springs are a stainless nichrome blend. The spring form factor is designed to promote optimum exothermic reaction with a wire diameter and coil count that mitigates excessive coil contraction while ensuring maximum airflow to the catalyst. Each price increment adds one spring, EG: $3.43 means you are ordering 3 springs. How much catalyst you place in a spring is a subjective preference. In these springs, a piece of catalyst .5x1.25 will result in the handwarmer achieving a nominal temp of about 135F. In a large spring such as an S-Boston or Jon-e GI, more is required.  Please refer to the video below for more information on stuffing springs with catalyst. How to determine the correct spring for your handwarmer: Remove the catalyst cap. Measure the internal width and length of the cap in millimeters. For example, a Zippo will measure approx 30mm long by 10mm wide. Make a note of those measurements in the notes if you think you need springs that are different from the standard size.

S.S. Catalyst Insertion Tweezers
Platinum catalyst material is very fragile and easy to damage. The most common way it gets damaged is when it is being inserted into a spring. Fragmented catalyst does not perform well in a spring because the safil substrate density is not consistent. Take a look at a thermal image of fragmented catalyst during the exothermic reaction and you'll see quite a few different colors on the heat map. Your tools need to have optimal design for inserting platinum catalyst pads into springs because you only get one chance. These Stainless Steel anti static tweezers have  flat spade tips so that they sandwich the safil rather than pinch and penetrate it. The parallel 30mm arms on them correspond to the average length of a handwarmer catalyst head, and the 12mm gap between the tips fits over the average thickness of 10mm of the catalyst pads without piercing the safil substrate material. The shoulders at the end of the 30mm arms stop your insertion at the optimal length for most springs, and prevents pushing the catalyst material out past the far side of the spring. The overall design elements of these serve to squeeze the entire pad and compress it to facilitate sliding the catalyst into the spring without fragmenting it. Think of these as an insurance policy, for the price of a Starbuck's Latte, these can save you the equivalent of a tank of gas in undamaged catalyst material that will not need to be replaced, and give substance to a handwarmer that produces 10 degrees more heat. In the options below, the first price is for one pair ($5.91), and the second is for two pair ($9.92).

Red Star Handwarmer
Because the S-Boston is no longer in production, we had 500 of these units made up. We add proper catalyst to them, place a carbon felt strip on the top of the reservoir, and sell them in bulk as listed below. (For more information on this unit and the modifications see our Youtube Video, "Handwarmers S04E10: The Red Star Handwarmer, memories of the Cultural Revolution?" https://youtu.be/97dcZJ6zO6U?list=PLDXT34Ltvhm_lajF6yfU-ZNJE7TQVWeKm

This Chinese made handwarmer caught our attention when we noticed the burner design that resembles the original Jon-e design. So we grabbed a sample, and tested it. Unfortunately it did not perform like a Jon-e, in fact it took quite awhile to light it, and when we did, it kept going out, and did not get very hot. So we took the rather strange looking catalyst screen out, and it seemed to be filled with some sort of powder (as seen in video). Then we did a few mod's. We put a carbon felt strip at the top of the reservoir, and then placed our platinum catalyst into a large diameter spring (the same diameter as a Jon-e Giant). This seemed to make a difference, and we were able to achieve nominal temperatures of 145F. In our opinion, this unit, when modified as noted above, can function as a better Zippo replacement and can be used in place of the S-Boston. This listing is for a value-added item: the handwarmer with carbon felt strip, and full catalyst pad (with spring), installed in the burner head. Also includes the pouch. There is a video about this unit in our Youtube channel. Update 2020/2021: The second phase of testing the Holmes heated work gloves (see Video S05E01), involved placing handwarmers into the battery compartment. These worked best of all the ones we tried. 1: the size was a perfect fit. 2: The vents on the top of the lid allowed for air to get to the catalyst. 3: The fatter reservoir body retains heat and promotes fuel evaporation better than the thin body Zippo units.

The unit when catalyzing at maximum rate, will consume about 2ml per hour. The assembled size of these is 3.5"x2-1/4"x3/4", and the unfueled weight is 54 grams (almost 2 oz when in the pouch). Reservoir total vol is 44ml, and is typically filled with 30ml of fuel when empty. This is about 30 times you can use it if you start with a quart of fuel.

Handwarmers S04E12: 2020's best electronic handwarmer
Instead of just stating that the above model is currently the best choice for an electronic device to warm your pockets, this demonstration examines and explains each factor that led to giving substance to our hypothesis that this is the best option available to you for heating your pockets with a battery powered electronic device.
Handwarmer/flashlight (with battery) 2021 version
This is an S12 host, and what is unique about it is, it can 'host' the same 21700 cells that Tesla uses, and has 3 LED's at the bottom of the reflector. This affords us the opportunity to use three LED's with impressive CRI (Color Rendition Index) values that I've always wanted to try: the 219B R9080 LED with DTP copper plate with a wavelength as close to Infrared as possible (and as far away from UV as possible) for a flashlight: 3000K (Typical incandescent lighting is 2700K which is yellowish-white). We get a number of comments such as, "wouldn't it be better to use a 'red' LED?" It might be, but unfortunately there are no red LED's that we can find that draw anything close to 3A, let alone 6A, and it is the current draw that produces the heat from these lights (Nominal temp in pocket is about 60C). We can take advantage of the increased current draw of 3 LED's (pictured below), which will result in more heat. In fact the current draw of this unit which uses a high current driver, can exceed 3 amps (think of having a 12W heater in your pocket)! This driver has built in temperature protection management (If the flashlight temperature is below 55 degrees Celsius, it will output full current. If it is above 55 degrees Celsius, it will constantly adjust the current so that the flashlight will not overheat.). Includes a 5aH 21700 rechargeable Li-Ion battery. Battery charger not included. Beam pattern is Flood. Temperature can be adjusted by changing the light intensity settings (4 modes: moonlight, Low, Med, High). Dimensions: 34.6/27.4x134 mm. Weight: 200g with battery. And did we mention, this unit is also an awesome flashlight!

Handwarmers S04E14 Coronavirus safety and new technology for electronic handwarmers.
Before I get started on the discussion of this new model, a word about what's on everyone's minds these days, the spillover event related to the Coronavirus and Covid-19 (COVID-19 is the illness caused by the novel coronavirus). COVID-19 can also live on surfaces up to a few days, so we are going to look at what you can do for handwarmer safety. I know most of you are self isolating, and working from home. (Of course, as a guy with no friends, I'm used to being at home all day talking to my goldfish 'Wheeler', who is a great listener.) You may be concerned about the safety of your handwarmer, and the possibility of it to host shedded viral progeny. We'll first explore the questions around that as they pertain to the various handwarmers, both liquid fuel such as the zippo, and the newer battery operated devices. This will give you some guidelines for keeping yourself, and others, protected as best as possible while you recreate outdoors.
Deodorizer Treatment
Deodorizer 30ml
Mint terpenes. Mint Terpenes are hydrocarbons, and they do not interfere with the exothermic reaction that the handwarmer uses to produce heat. Recommended to treat 1qt of fuel. Bottle material is HDPE plastic. Plastic is not suitable for long term storage of Terpenes. If you plan to store this over the 'off-season', transfer the bottle contents to a glass or metal vessel with the smallest air cavity possible, or purge air cavity with inert gas such as 'computer dust-off'. (Tip: empty the contents of this bottle into 1 qt (or 1litre) of naptha, then use this small HDPE bottle to refill your hand warmers with 30ml of fuel each time before you go out).

Video: Winter Cycling, Using handwarmers and pogies on your bike.
First episode in our liquid fuel handwarmer series for the 2020 season. With the advent of bike racks on every corner, overpriced bike locks with GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi, and studded tires, it's remarkable how many bikes are now on the road all winter. This is true of fat bikes, mountain bikes, city commuter bikes, and road bikes. And showing up on all these bikes are various styles of "bar mitts" (also commonly referred to as "Pogies"). They work great unto themselves, allowing the user to cycle comfortably with thin cycling gloves. They also lend themselves to being taken to the next level with the addition of either liquid fuel handwarmers, or, for eBike riders with a convenient USB outlet on their battery pack, USB heating pads.
Glove liners for Bar Mitts
Originally developed for neuropathy and rheumatoid arthritis, they provide mild compression to support your joints. They are very comfortable, and provide warmth and functionality when you extract your hands from the mitts when cycling or skiing. As seen in our video on Handlebar Mitts for winter cycling. Half-finger style, fleece fabric made from cotton and spandex. Specify 'L' or 'M' size in notes (if nothing specified, M will be shipped).

*Paypal

There are several reasons why a seller may choose to no longer accept Paypal as a payment method, including the high fees and unrealistic policies that Paypal imposes on sellers.

One major issue with Paypal is the high fees that it charges for processing transactions. These fees can significantly cut into a seller's profits, especially for small businesses or individuals who may not have a high volume of sales. In order to remain financially viable, sellers may need to pass on these fees to their customers in the form of higher prices. This can be problematic for sellers who are trying to keep their prices low in order to combat the effects of inflation (I like to say, what CO2 is to global warming, Paypal is to inflation), as it can make their products less competitive in the market, and contribute to the never ending dynamic of spiraling global inflation.

Another issue with Paypal is its policies with respect to sellers. These policies can be unrealistic and burdensome, and can make it difficult for sellers to operate effectively. For example, Paypal may hold onto a seller's funds for an extended period of time, which can create cash flow problems for the seller. Another example: the seller cannot make use of the cheaper shipping methods that do not use tracking, so the client must pay a hefty surcharge to add tracking to their purchase. For low cost items, this means the shipping charge can be more than the item itself. Additionally, Paypal may also require sellers to adhere to inflexible partisan rules and guidelines, which can be time-consuming and costly to comply with. As an example, last year Paypal went into our bank account and withdrew $450.00 because a buyer of antennas located in New Zealand complained their shipment was late. If you have a problem and want to talk to a human? Forget it. We had no recourse to address this issue with Paypal, and we eventually worked out a compromise solution directly with the buyer which took almost a year and hours and hours of labor on our part.

In contrast, alternative payment methods such as Zelle, ACH, and Wise offer a more attractive option for sellers due to their low or nonexistent fees and more flexible policies. These payment methods allow sellers to accept payments with minimal financial burden, and they also provide buyers with the convenience of making purchases in their own currency with no exchange rate spreads.

Overall, the decision to no longer accept Paypal as a payment method can be a sound one for sellers who are looking to keep their prices low and combat the effects of inflation. By switching to alternative payment methods such as Zelle, ACH, and Wise, sellers can benefit from lower fees and more flexible policies, while still providing their customers with a safe and secure way to make purchases.

Buyers may perceive that they need to use Paypal and pay higher prices in order to protect themselves through Paypal's buyer protection policies. In my experience they do not seem to know that although Paypal says 'most' disputes take 30 days, it is not uncommon to take 3 months or more. At the moment we generate a shipping image of each shipment and send it to the client. Shipping to the USA is via tracket packet, so clients in the USA can track their package. Because it is so expensive for sending a tracked package to Europe, clients there have the option to use cheaper shipping, or pay a premium for tracking. For Canada, the shipping method is determined by the size and weight of the package. It's pretty obvious we are not some company running a scam website selling sham products, and also it seems rather inefficient for someone to pay a premium to labour under the illusion they have some buyer protection for an order that typically costs less than $100.00.

Both Zelle and Wise offer fast and convenient ways to send and receive payments. With Zelle, users can easily send money to friends, family, and businesses directly from their bank account, and recipients can typically access the funds within minutes. Similarly, Wise allows users to send and receive payments internationally with low fees and competitive exchange rates. This can be particularly useful for individuals or businesses who need to make or receive payments quickly, as it eliminates the need for time-consuming processes such as mailing checks or waiting for wire transfers to clear.

In addition to their convenience, both Zelle and Wise also offer a high level of security. Zelle is backed by major banks and financial institutions, and uses advanced security measures to protect users' information and transactions. Wise also has a strong focus on security, with measures such as two-factor authentication and encrypted communication to protect users' data.

Another benefit of signing up for an account with Zelle or Wise is the ability to easily track and manage payments. Both platforms offer tools such as transaction history and account statements, which can be useful for keeping track of expenses and budgeting.

Overall, signing up for an account with Zelle or Wise can be highly desirable due to their fast and convenient payment options, strong focus on security, and useful tools for tracking and managing payments. These benefits can make Zelle and Wise particularly useful for individuals or businesses who need to make or receive payments quickly and securely.
