Hello from Blue Valley Middle School’s Counseling department! As part of our comprehensive counseling program, we offer small group counseling. Often, students who share a common concern find it helpful to meet to share ideas and gather support in a group setting. These groups will meet once a week during FLEX for 6 weeks. Groups will consist of no more than 8 students. Groups consist of students of the same grade. If we do not have enough students per group, the group will not run this semester. We are currently offering the groups starting in January below:
Friendship Strategies: Students will learn how to make positive friendships and identify the qualities that they want in a healthy relationship. They will learn how to manage conflicts in person and digitally. Students will learn to set healthy boundaries and work to become a positive peer.
School Success Strategies: Students will identify the best place/time to study. They will set short-term academic goals and develop organizational skills. Students will learn how to best utilize their time.
Self-Esteem Group: Students will learn how to develop confidence and self-esteem by understanding who they are, changing negative thoughts into positive ones and setting attainable goals. Stress Busters: Students will be able to define anxiety, identify triggers and warning signs, and understand what is happening in their brain or body. Students will gain a better understanding that they are not alone in terms of their worries and anxiety. Lastly, students will identify strategies that would work best to reduce anxiety.
Social Skills: Students will be able to initiate and maintain a productive conversation while actively listening and appropriately engaging. Students will learn how to build positive relationships with peers and adults, understand social cues, resolve conflicts and problem solve. They will be challenged to think about their social interactions with each other and how to communicate effectively.
