Youth Mental Health First Aid is offered to school staff and community partners working with adolescents in Washtenaw County schools and is led by local certified Youth Mental Health First Aid instructors.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach adults who regularly interact with young people how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth ages 12-18. This 6.5-hour course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan to reach out and provide initial support to young people who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and connect them to appropriate care. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders, and eating disorders.
Participants will first need to complete a 2-hour, self-paced online class before participating in this 4-hour, live instructor-led training.
