As Europe's long-overdue transition away from Russian gas has become accelerated by the war in Ukraine, the politics of necessity - fuelled by past political naivety and short-sighted convenience - once again risks the sustainability of future generations. As Europe runs the risk of carbon lock-in due to accelerated investments that might soon become stranded assets, are there alternatives and other low-hanging fruits to explore as the EU embarks on its journey towards both decarbonization and strategic autonomy?
