Green-SJ Application 2024

What is GREEN-SJ?

GREEN-SJ is a program within the Department of Environmental Science (ES) at Rowan University funded by the National Science Foundation to foster greater diversity in the geosciences and provide a home base for transfer students and existing ES majors at Rowan from communities traditionally under-represented in science and math. GREEN-SJ is all about finding better ways forward in Environmental Science. For transfer students who have to adapt to a new school and new professors as they earn a Bachelor’s degree. And for Environmental Science majors already at Rowan who want more out of their undergrad experience. Transfer students from Cumberland County can test the waters at Rowan EVSC before they even finish at RCSJ-C.

GREEN-SJ provides opportunities to work in labs, tutor peers, and pursue internships, while earning the credits and salary students need to achieve their educational goals, all within a supportive community focused on their success at Rowan and beyond. Federally- funded financial support exists for those from traditionally under-represented communities in STEM including:  Black and African American, Hispanic and Latino, Native American/Indigenous/American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander. The wider community is open to everyone, including professional development and some peer tutoring and research opportunities.

Who should apply?

  • A junior in the ES major at Rowan

    • ROWAN STUDENTS: Preference will be given to existing ES majors but students wishing to change majors are encouraged to apply. Students who will reach junior standing in Spring 2024 or Summer 2024 are also encouraged to apply.

  • A second year student at a 2-year school

    • RCSJ-C STUDENTS: Open to ES majors and those planning to transfer into Rowan ES (e.g., math, chemistry, biology)

    • TRANSFER STUDENTS: Students who meet the criteria and are enrolled in other regional community colleges are encouraged to contact us about applying.

GREEN-SJ was funded by the NSF to foster greater diversity in the geosciences so federally funded financial support exists for those from traditionally under-represented communities (Black and African American, Hispanic and Latino, Native American/Indigenous/American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander) who are U.S. citizens or who hold a green card. Other financial support exists for students from traditionally under-represented communities who do not qualify for federal support, including tuition relief, professional development and some peer tutoring and research opportunities.
