Physical nature of volunteer responsibilities: Crayfish surveys will be conducted at dusk and necessitate transporting gear (possibly up to 25 lbs) while hiking in and out (after dark) from designated survey sites (for example, near bridge crossings in the Tryon Creek State Natural Area). They will also involve accessing the creek (carefully moving up or down hill off-trail), wading, using a dip net, and bending frequently during surveys.
Clear selection
Scheduling: Surveys will be held at dusk, 4-8 nights per month (June through September), and possibly clustered on weekends. Does this fit with your availability? How frequently would you be interested in joining surveys? (As this is a new type of volunteer opportunity, we are asking this to learn, for example, whether there are 2 people who'd like to come out every night possible, or 20 people who only want to come out once!)
Experience: Do you have experience working with crayfish, other invertebrates, in-stream surveys, habitat data (water quality, etc.), and/or in community science generally? Experience isn't required; this will inform our planning.
If you are a student or other person looking to build career-related skills, what is your area of focus/what can we help you get out of this volunteer experience?
