Ukulele Workshops with Glen McCarthy
The Spring 2021 Veterans Ukulele Workshop Series is free to Veterans, Servicemembers, their families, and military caregivers. Please note the information sheet on HyltonCenter.org/veterans for information about minimum age of participation, as well as our inclement weather policy and COVID-19 guidelines (including Zoom policies).

PLEASE NOTE: due to closure of the Hylton Performing Arts Center to all on-site programming because of COVID-19 precautions, the workshop series will occur VIRTUALLY on Tuesdays, February 9 – March 2, 2021 (Level I: 7 – 7:45 p.m.; Level II: 8 – 8:45 p.m.) via Zoom. A short Zoom tutorial will be available to all participants prior to the start of the series.

The objective of the workshops is to help each participant improve their general ukulele skills to play songs; curriculum is flexible and determined at the discretion of the instructor to meet the needs of a diverse group of abilities. To determine the difference between Level I and Level II, please see the registration form below.
Space is limited; therefore, we ask all participants to plan to attend the entire series.

To be considered for the workshop, please fill out the registration below, and you will be contacted regarding the status of your registration. Registration forms that are incomplete will be returned to be completed. Each member of a family who is participating should fill out an individual form.

(Please note – there will be no automatic reply generated from the submission of this registration form; please allow up to five business days to receive notice from the Hylton Center staff regarding the status of your registration.)

How to determine if you should register for Level I or Level II:

3. Do you know a number of chords and can you quickly switch between these chords?
4. Can you play songs that call for a particular strumming technique?

To participate, you will need a ukulele method book recommended by the instructor. A Hylton Center staff member will reach out with details, and you will have two options: you can purchase the book with the details provided or Veterans and the Arts Initiative will purchase the e-book for you.

Ukulele Availability
We do have a limited number of ukuleles available for Veterans, Servicemembers, military family members, and military caregivers who do not currently own a ukulele or a guitar (which can be played with a capo for ukulele workshops). Ukuleles are not guaranteed. If you would like to borrow a ukulele for the duration of the series, please submit your availability for a 10-minute appointment to meet a staff member at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. Time slots are available during weekday afternoons/evenings based on building availability. A staff member will contact you to confirm your appointment. Appointments will take place outside the main entrance of the Hylton Performing Arts Center. To ensure the safety of all involved, participants and staff members are required to wear a mask during pick up, and ukuleles will only be given to those over the age of 18 (a parent/guardian must pick up a ukulele for a minor).
