Revelation without Translation: Pre-Shavuot Talmud Study

In the weeks between Pesach and Shavuot, we move from liberation to revelation. What better way to prepare for Mount Sinai than to study our oral Torah, in the original, with no translation? If you've never opened a daf of Talmud before, NOW is your chance to learn the skills necessary for this kind of study. The only prerequisite for this course is the ability to decipher the alef-bet. Everything else that you'll need, you already learned at Sinai.

Tell us about your experience with studying Talmud. Have you ever studied in the original language (Hebrew/Aramaic)? *

What is your current Hebrew level? (This course will require the ability to read the alef-bet, but all Hebrew levels beyond that are welcome!) *

Zero: I have never learned any Hebrew before.

Beginner: I can read the alef-bet, but I do not know what any of the words mean.

Intermediate: I know basic Hebrew vocabulary and can follow along in a prayerbook or text.

Advanced: I have studied Hebrew at a college or dayschool level. I understand most of the words that I read in a text.

There is no fee for this course, but it will require the purchase of two Talmud dictionaries: Marcus Jastrow's "Dictionary of the Targumim, the Talmud Babli and Yerushalmi, and the Midrashic Literature" (about $40) and Yitzhak Frank's "The Practical Talmud Dictionary" (about $30). Both can be found on Amazon or other book purchasing websites. We are committed to making this course accessible for all, without regard to ability to pay.
