Synchronous learning experiences gain significant value when Cohort Members interact directly with guest speakers and course directors. In fact, every year, the GLI Admissions Committee decides to accept applicants based on how their profile fits within the mosaic of the incoming Cohort, to make sure that diverse professional experiences, cultural backgrounds, and points of view make the learning environment as rich as possible for everyone.
Attendance is therefore a key aspect of consideration within the participation grade of all courses.
While each course’s grading system is different, participation is always one variable that is considered. If you don’t want your participation grade to go down, then there are two steps involved for every class you miss:
1) Submitting this form (Absence Excuse Form) 24 hours before the class you’ll miss.
2) Submitting a Make-up Form + leave a comment on Slack before the end of the week when the class took place (you can find this form in the Woolf LMS>Academic Information as well as in our Syllabus).
If a Cohort Member submits only one of these forms, their participation grade is only minimally affected. On the flip side, if a Cohort Member misses class without submitting either form, this has a more significant impact on their participation grade.
Lastly, Cohort Members may not have more than three unexcused absences per semester. Having more than three without having submitted the Absence Excuse Form will be grounds for dismissal from the program. Arriving more than 15 minutes late without prior written agreement from the Dean of Cohort will count towards unexcused absences.
