Stempower Mentoring Program Application (Sept. 2020 - April 2021)
Thank you for your interest in Stempower's Mentoring Program! Please read the following information carefully. The application should only be completed once by your group's point-of-contact (ex. troop leader, parent). We are offering several options to accommodate virtual and asynchronous engagements. Please read through the descriptions below:

1. Virtual Group Mentoring:

If your group has decided to host virtual meetings, this is your program! Stempower will connect your group with inspiring student mentors once a month for a total of four-five meetings through leading fun STEM activities. Your mentoring dates, between September and April, will be coordinated individually upon acceptance and are typically scheduled during your regular meeting times.

2. Virtual One-on-One Mentoring

This program matches one child to one Stempower mentor and is recommended for older children (4th grade and up). Based on your individual schedule, your child and a Stempower mentor will meet regularly for 30-60 minutes throughout the year to share fun STEM experiences and develop a strong mentor-mentee bond. For Girl Scouts, we will be completing badge requirements.

3. Asynchronous Engagements

If your Scout(s) are too young to have fun in virtual meetings, Stempower can provide mentorship asynchronously, such as letter writing, short YouTube video demonstrations, instructions for easy at home activities, and more! For Girl Scouts, we will provide opportunities to complete badge requirements.

4. STEM around the City

With the help of local children, Stempower will compile a list of places around the Greater Lafayette area (e.g your house/neighborhood, parks, downtown, Purdue, etc.) where kids may explore STEM in the everyday world. If interested, we will share guidelines for submissions and compile them into a shareable booklet. Children who submit ideas may remain anonymous or be credited by name in the booklet! We may host STEM outdoor events at these sites around the city.

Requirements:

Any child in Tippecanoe County may participate in these programs. Participating Girl Scouts should belong to a Daisy, Brownie, or Junior Girl Scout Troop. For all virtual programs, children need reliable Internet access and a device that supports video calls. If your group/individual does not fall within these requirements, but you are still interested in working with Stempower, please email stempower.purdue@gmail.com for more opportunities.

Timeline:

Applications are due by Thursday, September 17th. If your group/individual is selected as a candidate, you will be contacted via email to confirm your first meeting date and request a roster of participants. Mentoring begins mid-October and concludes in April. You may complete the meeting dates in one semester, or throughout the entire academic year.
