CMU Music Theory Assessment
* You can test only once.

* This online placement test is used to determine the appropriate theory class for your level of knowledge but will not affect your admission to the music major, which is based on your audition. You will receive an admission letter later, and it will indicate a preliminary music theory class placement based on the result of this online exam. A paper placement exam will be held the first day of the music theory class, and your class placement can be changed by the result of the paper exam.

* Topics on the Theory Assessment include note names in treble and bass clef, identifying major and minor scales, identifying the time signature of rhythm examples, identifying major and minor key signatures, labeling intervals by distance (2nd, 3rd, etc) and quality (major, minor, perfect, augmented, diminished), and labeling triads (major, minor, diminished, augmented).
