Locus Volunteer Form
Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Locus. Locus is a non-profit magazine, with only
six full-time paid staff members. We rely on subscriptions, donations, and in-house and remote volunteers
and interns to keep the magazine and website going. In volunteering you will be giving back to the
SFFH community by supporting Locus’s nonprofit mission: to promote, preserve, and celebrate
speculative fiction – science fiction, fantasy, horror – through the discussion and
exploration of the works of our diverse community of creators.

If you would like to share any identity information, we welcome you to share it,
but do not require it. Locus explicitly stands in support of disabled, trans, queer,
black, indigenous, and POC communities.
Volunteering is an unpaid position. While volunteering can often create any number of opportunities, there are no guarantees that those opportunities will happen; Locus cannot guarantee, promise, or in any other way offer specific compensation. Please check this box to acknowledge this statement.

Locus cannot promise to delegate tasks which are of specific interest to you. While
we do ask about your interests and skills in hopes that we can line up tasks which
you will enjoy best, so much depends on the complexities of staff assignments and
the needs of the magazine. Often, the things we really need help with are mundane
or even tedious. Needs can also change from day to day, week to week. One day
may be proofreading, the next may be data entry, and then on to some other task
after that. Please check this box to acknowledge this statement.

Showing folks how to do the things that will help us takes time, energy, and focus
on our part, and as a staff, we’re stretched very thin. Please keep in mind that even taking
on volunteers creates more work for us – but when it goes well, we’re
grateful for the help, and it’s always rewarding to get to know awesome people.

Thank you for applying to volunteer! We appreciate your thoughtful responses.
You should receive a confirmation notice. If we can fit you in, we’ll be in touch! We
will keep your information on file: even if we can’t fit you in now, things may change
at a later date.
