Charge up your magnets and unroll that toilet paper!
Tell me what wigs you out the way John Starks got wigged out with the fouls and his missed free throws, the way Tate wigged out before his prelims 100 Free at NCAAs, and tell me how you're going to keep your wits about you during those kinds of moments.
A conversation on collaborative goals
Sometimes a coach sees more in you than you see in yourself.  What's sets these two apart is that were willing to think WAY past what the current standards are.  What helped Michael focus on his goal IN PRACTICE?
Michael wasn't afraid of "pain" or "sacrifice," he just wanted what he wanted.  What makes you back away from setting exciting goals or following through with their pursuit?
Dream, Plan, Reach is their mindset, then walk it out.  What's your dream, what's your plan, and how are you going to reach for it every day?
Having a dream is great, planning out is super important, but it really only matters if you consistently get the work done.
Focus and consistency can come out at every practice, but we let things get in our way.  Sometimes small things, like if you have hurt feelings you won't try, or if you don't like the set, or you don't like the lane you're in, whatever, where is your line for backing off?  What circumstances do you feel like give yourself a permission slip to miss practice or not try during a set?
Phelps is always being creative to get better.  You need to know  where you need to grow, and then go after gains there.  What's one thing you want to improve on and what are you doing to do out of the water to get better at it?
With work comes recovery, what things does Michael do to support his recovery that you can do, too?
How has Michael changed how he treats his body with nutrition?
Michael's training mindset.
Describe the Phelps training mindset:
How does Michael use visualization for success?
What's Michael's competition mindset?
Michael set goals for practice as well as for meets, do you set practice goals and if so what are they?
What are some things that he does well with his mindset that you want to improve on?
Because Michael has super psychological stubbornness, he won't be knocked off balance no matter what happens at the meet.  So for him, if he trains well, it will show in the race.   What can you do to be more psychologically stubborn so that what you build in practice is available in your races?
There's a great portion of video in the movie that shows what I've been trying to explain about the importance of going into your turns well so I got some pictures to illustrate this skill.  Look at the distance between the guy that's ahead and the guy that's behind.  About half a body length.
Now on that last stroke, it's about a quarter of a body length.
They're now done swimming and starting their turns, other guy still about a "back" behind.
Wait, how is other guy ahead now?
For real, did you know just going INTO a turn could give you a half a body length advantage on each wall?  This isn't even what you can do going OUT of your turn, which is where I think most people think you win turns.   So if you do this skill well, in a 100 free, your turns could mean a body length.  In a 200, 2 body lengths.  A 500?  1000? Mile?  I feel like instead of using our turn approach to separate we use it to rest and hope they are resting too.  Please please tell me you get this and you will stop shuffling into turns and hoping for an extra breath and instead take advantage of what almost everyone else does wrong here?  Lord help you if you take a breath WHILE starting your flipturn...
I'm including this video to inspire the training side of you, and to introduce you to an athlete that is kind, funny, warm, smiley and a total physical beast.  I want to show you that beautiful women can be strong and powerful physically, and that your body can be WAY more powerful than it is, both you guys and gals.  You just have to have a  purpose and train it up.
What do you think of this Katrin person?  What do you find surprising or impressive?
Is there anything you aspire to become after watching this video?
