Musical Practice in the Time of Covid-19

Covid-19 has brought a collapse in established cultural and social activities. People have become increasingly confined to their homes and the world of work and leisure has become uncertain. This survey seeks to understand how people’s relationship with musical instruments – their practice and performance – changed during and after the Covid-19 lockdown. We are particularly interested in instrumental practice, but we include therein the voice and music software.

This survey is part of a larger research project run by the two investigators. Professor Thor Magnusson is running a research project called Sonic Writing, studying the role of musical instruments in contemporary culture, and Dr Mimi Haddon is a musicologist studying musical practice with an eye on gender, ethnicity and class. Both are members of the Music Department at the University of Sussex, Brighton, UK. Information about them can be found here:

This survey is aimed at anyone who plays or practises a musical instrument, including those who have just started practising an instrument, and this includes the voice and music software. We hope you can help us to understand the role of musical practice during this exceptional historical period. The result of this survey will be published as an open access academic article and also in the form of a blog post.
