Theatre and Cinema 2021-2022 Programming Submission Form
Virginia Tech’s Theatre and Cinema Program invites the submission of project ideas for our Fall 2021 - Spring 2022 programming. This call is open to all members of the School of Performing Arts, Virginia Tech, and New River Valley communities.

We turn to you, our community, to submit theatre, cinema, dance, and interdisciplinary scripted and non-scripted projects for consideration through a faculty and student review process. We are open to submissions of all kinds—little projects, big projects, short-term projects, long-term projects -- that align with our educational mission and serve the needs of our students. We are specifically looking for projects that challenge white-centric, patriarchal, capitalist, and anthropocentric points of view.

We ask ourselves to think together about the hard realities of oppressive systems that shape and impact our culture–including white supremacy and racism. How can we come together to become an anti-racist* and anti-oppressive community? How can we best utilize our facilities and programming to give space to marginalized voices?

It’s not about just plays, or which play is the right play. It’s about why we need to create a piece of art with each other, for the audiences we have around us. Every artistic project, play, dance, film, performance, creative exploration, is an exercise of the imagination, a partnership of imaginations, a creative space to consider together what it is to be human. We are a smart, talented, bold, creative community. Let’s begin imagining projects that we want to do, projects that make sense under our circumstances, that provide containers for our dreams. that give us the opportunity to discover ways of working together for real, immediate social justice amongst ourselves.

We extend this invitation with a spirit of deep gratitude for the willingness of students, faculty, staff, and community members alike to join the ongoing struggle for social justice. We are calling for project ideas that will give us a chance to work in new ways, to discover who we are together, who we dream to be, as artists, as teachers, as learners, and as members of our communities and our society.

* ”Anti-racism... is a system in which we create policies, practices, and procedures to promote racial equity. Anti-racism generates antiracist thoughts and ideas to justify the racial equity it creates by uplifting the innate humanity and individuality of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.” - Jordan Carter and Ian Snyder
