Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the perceived value, attitude,
and satisfaction of the permanent academic staff of KwaZulu-Natal towards the utilisation of the UKZN medical scheme.
Purpose:ย The purpose
of the questionnaire is to collect data is to understand the ย extent to which various plans and policies
that have been implemented by the UKZN Medical Scheme to assist its members to
manage their health and well-being satisfy the needs of the academic staff.
The employees of
the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and their immediate family members, are
covered by the University of KwaZulu-Natal Medical Scheme. The purpose of
the UKZN medical scheme is to care for its members' health and well-being by
engaging in innovative solutions that provide access to affordable, equitable, quality,
and value-based healthcare that meets their needs now and sustainably into the
future.ย Discovery Health as the
UKZN medical scheme administrator to managed-care servicesย (UKZN Medical Scheme Benefit Brochure, 2021, p.3).
The University of KwaZulu-Natal obligates its permanent staff to utilize the University medical scheme along with their immediate
family. The staff is deducted a certain amount of money from their salary
monthly based on the salary scale and the number of dependants towards the
medical scheme.ย
The UKZN Medical scheme cover has a range
of plans designed to suit its members based on their monthly income and number
of beneficiaries. Various policies have been implemented by the Medical Scheme
to assist its members to manage their health and well-being. However, the extent
to which these plans and policies satisfy the needs of the academic staff is
not known.
Customer perceived value, attitude, choices, and satisfaction
play a critical role in determining the customersโ loyalty and willingness to
pay more (KeyHealth
Medical Aid, 2020 & Demirgรผneล, 2015, p.214). Hence, the perception of the
value of the services provided by the medical scheme operators is important.
Moreover, it is important to understand users' perceived value as it affects
the attitudes, choices, and satisfaction towards the UKZN medical aid scheme
services. Unfortunately,
these perspectives have not been deeply considered and understood from the
research context in the medical scheme industry in South Africa.
The Theory of User-Centred Design is the theory that underpins this
study.
Therefore, this survey will be conducted within UKZN campuses (Edgewood,
Howard college, Medical school, Pietermaritzburg, and Westville). For an in depth study, I will be collecting both quantitative data (questionnaire
distribution with the academic staff) and qualitative data (interview with the
UKZN medical scheme staff). This is to ensure a balanced study, taking into cognisance both the user's and the provider's perspectives.
The information you provide will be used solely for research
purposes, and all responses will be kept confidential in accordance with
research ethics.
