Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Universal Promise.

The cost of the volunteer trip is $1,500, excluding airfare.

The cost includes all the volunteer activities, in-country transportation, lodging, three meals a day, orientation, and other special events: a safari, a potential visit to the seaside city of Port Elizabeth, after-school activities, Sunday church service (if desired), a farewell dinner, and ancestral ceremonies (if available).

The cost does not include round-trip airfare to South Africa or personal items, such as trip insurance, laundry, phone calls, snacks, souvenirs, etc.

Every volunteer must complete the following application. If the applicant is selected to participate, that person must then read, sign, and submit waivers and submit payment, as outlined below.

If you are chosen to volunteer with Universal Promise, we have a no-phone policy while we are on-site volunteering and while we are eating our meals. You must, therefore, leave your phone back at our lodging. Universal Promise trip leaders will always have phones on them. In the event of an emergency back home, your loved ones will be able to reach you, because you will have provided them with the trip leaders' contact information. You may use your cell phones only when back at the lodging. Most volunteers welcome and embrace this digital detox, not only for their benefit but also out of respect for the South Africans we serve. We allow the taking of photographs under certain circumstances. Any social media posting of photos of those we serve is strictly prohibited without Universal Promise's and each subject's permission. Your submission of this application indicates your understanding of and acceptance of the statement above. *

To participate in our volunteer program in South Africa, you may be required to submit to a background check before we consider your application. This process is quite simple and may be orchestrated through your local police department.  *

We believe that giving back through Universal Promise should not start when we get on the plane but weeks in advance of that. Toward that end, we ask all volunteers to collaborate with fellow group members to raise money to fund (and then to bring to fruition while on the volunteer trip, if possible) one or more of our partner-schools’ sustainable Top 10 Wish List items or, under rare circumstances, fund and bring to fruition another approved sustainable project that is in line with our mission. *

We also believe that giving back through Universal Promise should not end when we return to our home soil. For that reason, after each volunteer trip, a volunteer is expected to join our #401Gives Fundraising Team. #401Gives is a Rhode Island-based, statewide, online period-of-giving from late-March to early-April. We ask all team members to raise (not to donate) $100. We will provide all the required details to support your success. Thank you. *
