Pickens County ESSER Fund Usage and School Reopening Plan Survey

ESSER:  Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief

Please answer the following questions with regard to the period from Summer 2021 until now regarding ESSER Funds and the current Pickens County Schools Reopening Plan.  

Remember, these questions cover all the way back to the beginning of COVID 19 school closures until present.

1.  Are you aware or have you been aware of the Pickens County Reopening Schools Plan or Guide to Reopening Plan that has been included on the school website?

2.  Currently, schools have been fully reopened for about 2 years. With reports of a resurgence of COVID19 in the fall, how comfortable are you with the current precautions, if any, being taken in schools?

3.  How would you rate your fear/concern for COVID-19 safety at your school currently?

4.   Pickens County Schools will be updating the Pickens County Reopening Schools Plan. If you have any suggestions for changes or additions to the plan, list them below.

5.  Are you aware or have you been aware that Pickens County Schools have received federal COVID-19 relief funds or ESSER funds since 2020 and that the plans created for spending these funds are available on the Pickens County Schools Website?

6.  COVID relief or ESSER funds are federal funds and are subject to specific guidelines in how the funds are spent. Are you or have you been aware of the ways that ESSER funds can be expended?

7.  Are you aware or have you been aware of extra resources, such as extra staff, academic programs, and assessments that help identify and remediate the effects of learning loss in reading and/or math at your child’s school?

8.  Some ESSER funds are specifically reserved for extra help beyond the regular school day or during the summer. Are you aware of after school or summer school offerings at your child’s school?

ESSER funds can be expended in preventingpreparing for, and responding to COVID-19, including hiring new staff and avoiding layoffs. Funds can also be used in addressing learning losspreparing for reopening, and covid testingrepairing and upgrading projects to improve air quality in school buildings. Additionally, funds can be used for evidence based interventions, including summer schoolafter school, and extended year programs, which include addressing students’ academic, social, and emotional needs and addressing the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on underrepresented student subgroups.

The statements below will relate to how ESSER funds have been spent or are planned to be spent to this point.  Knowing the guidelines for ESSER spending and with your knowledge of how funds have been used, rate the following uses of ESSER funds.

9. ESSER funds have been used and are planned to be used to purchase cleaning, disinfectant, and personal protective supplies to prevent the spread of COVID 19 and other illnesses.

10.  ESSER funds have been or are planned to fund hiring staff including multiple Interventionist Teachers, Assistant Principals, Instructional Aides, Custodians, Core Teachers, a Curriculum Specialist, and an Administrator and Assistant to manage funds and inventory. In addition, contract money is budgeted to fund Student Security Officers in our schools.

11. ESSER funds have been or are planned to be used to fund summer school and limited during school and after school interventions or tutoring for struggling or failing students. Summer school includes not only teachers, but administrators, bus drivers, and custodians.

12.  ESSER funds have been or are planned to be used to fund research based programs for student diagnostics (Determine areas of weakness) and intervention (Address areas of weakness). Examples: Imagine Learning, Istation. Also, to purchase programs to address mental/social health such as Rhithm. In addition, funds have been used to purchase textbooks and supporting material to support core instruction and intervention.

13.  ESSER funds have been or are planned to be used to fund Chromebooks with related materials, apps and software to support their use, security, management, and inventory. In addition, funds have purchased various other instructional supplies and supports such as library related items, classroom technology etc.

14.  ESSER funds have been or are planned be used for parent stakeholder communication supports such as School Incites for district and school websites and Blackboard for email, text, and call out information. In addition, audio video or digital equipment for individual schools use for assembly and school function communication such as microphones and public address systems.

15.  ESSER funds have been or are planned to be used to fund Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment to replace aged and non-functioning units district wide. This includes integrated plans for increased ventilation to reduce the spread of germs and sickness.

16.  Currently, students in K-8th grades have access to classroom sets of Chromebooks which are primarily kept at school. This is a change from previous years when most students were able to take them home and were responsible for them each day. How do you view the current system as compared to previous years?

17.  How important is it to you for your child to bring home their Chromebook every day in comparison to having one kept at school and/or checked out as needed for home use?
