안녕하십니까,
UIUC 한인 학생회 KSA입니다.
현재 한국에 대한 국제적인 관심도가 높아지고 있습니다. 한국의 기술적인 요소와 K-Pop이 세계적인 집중을 받으며 한국어를 할 줄 하는 미국인에 대한 수요가 늘어나고 있습니다. 한국어 학습자들이 한국어 수업을 들으면서 자연스럽게 한국 사회와 역사, 문화 등 한국에 대한 전반적인 호기심이 자연스럽게 생기고 있으나, UIUC에는 한국학 교수님이 한 분밖에 안 계십니다.
앞으로 한국어를 공부하거나, 한국학을 연구하는 학생들이 늘어날 것으로 예상되는 이 상황에 현재 계신 교수님 한 분 만으로는 한국학을 공부하는 학생들에게 다양한 정보를 제공하고 깊이 있는 교육을 하기에는 부족함이 있습니다. 따라서, 한국학 교수들을 더 초빙 하여서 우리 학교 학생들에게 다양하고 체계적인 방법으로 한국어나 한국에 대한 공부를 할 수 있는 기회를 제공해주면 좋겠는 마음으로 이렇게 KSA측에서 청원서 서명 활동을 하게 되었습니다.
최근 한국학 및 한국 문화에 관한 관심이 증가하면서 한국의 언어, 역사, 사회에 관해 배우고자 하는 학생들의 수요가 빠르게 증가하고 있음에도 불구하고 UIUC가 한국학의 발전을 위해 두 번째 교수 채용에 관한 뚜렷한 의지를 보이지 않는 것은 정말 유감스러운 일입니다.
이번 청원서 활동을 통해서 UIUC Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures에 한국학 교수님들이 더 초빙되길 기원합니다.

We are members of the Korean Student Association at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Currently, as the interest in Korean culture and language is increasing rapidly, more students are wanting to take classes about Korean language, history, and culture.
Unfortunately, despite the strong presence of the Korean population on campus and the popularity of culture in the community, we regret that the Korean Studies program has declined significantly in the past decade.
Due to a lack of support from the College, the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, which once housed four tenure track faculty members in history, literature, linguistics, and anthropology, currently only has one tenure track faculty to teach content courses in Korean Studies, as UIUC has only made one hire in the past ten years, and is thus unable to fully meet the growing needs and interests of our students.
In consequence, UIUC students are deprived of the opportunity to learn about Korean history, literature, and culture.
It is heartbreaking to point out that despite the huge Korean popularity and rapidly increasing interest in Korean culture and community, UIUC has been ranked the lowest in the number of Korean Studies faculty according to the 2021 Big Ten Academic Alliance statistics of the Korean Studies program, based on the number of Korean studies faculty members and Korean majors/minors.
Thus, Korean Students Association at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has initiated a petition, asking the College of Liberal Arts and Science to institutionalize support for Korean Studies. We are trying to rebuild our Korean program at UIUC that has been neglected for years so that we can respond to clear student demands and compete with peer institutions.
