How should American social media companies operate in a global environment? Should they have policies that are indifferent to local law, if so what issues would this create?
Should American media companies view country specific content restrictions such as those that that decrease negative speech (i.e., restricting hate speech) differently than those that restrict how certain public figures can be spoken about in a country? If so, how can they do this on a large scale? Is it possible for media companies to come to a solution that treats different cultures equitably?
How do we determine which policy is correct? If American media companies were held to a certain international standard by the United States government, and they failed to meet that standard, what would be the punishment? If there was a punishment, how is this different from media companies being punished for not adhering to local law in other countries presently?
