STEM Summer Institute 2024 Instructor Application

I am SO excited to begin planning what I know will be our best year of STEM Summer Institute yet. STEM SI is an excellent resume builder as well as a way to make extra money in the summer AND hone your teaching skills alongside other dedicated educators.

STEM SI is a condensed, intense, and fun program that combines our 3 main strains of CAP & GOWN into a 2 week in-person summer "camp," hosted by the UAH College of Science! At STEM we build a strong academic foundation for students, provide ACT prep courses, and explore college and career options.

Rising 9 & 10th graders will take classes in each of the 4 ACT sections, foundational classes meant to ease their transition to high-school, and participate in a hands-on group project.

Rising 11 & 12th graders will take classes in each of the 4 ACT sections in the morning, and complete classes in college preparation, financial literacy, and have study time in the afternoon.

As always, we will incorporate trips to local corporations, inspirational speakers, volunteers, college trips, and a fun end of program celebration. Teachers will be asked to assist in a variety of capacities throughout the duration.

Our goal is to include ALL HCS schools--so we'd love our teaching staff to reflect that.

Our dates for STEM SI will be June 3-7th and July 8-12th, 2024. Plan on our days running 8:30am-4:30pm and include a break for lunch.

These are PAID teaching positions that pay at an approximate rate of $20/hour (exact amount depends on amount of experience with CAP & GOWN/STEM SI and the amount we raise for this year's program).

Currently I am hoping to hire for the following positions:

-Math ACT teacher
-English ACT teacher
-Reading ACT teacher
-Science ACT teacher
-9th and 10th grade "Foundations" teacher

All teachers will get a "planning" time during the day. All teachers WILL be expected to stay through the afternoon to facilitate programming, though they will not necessarily be "teaching" during this time. Teachers are the leaders of this program and we'd love to have you as involved as you are able to be.

Once hiring is complete, teachers will meet 4-5 times before STEM starts to plan out our program and make sure everyone is prepared and ready to be successful. These meetings will be coordinated with the group as much as possible!

PLEASE feel free to text, call, or email with any questions or concerns as you consider applying.

The STEM Summer Institute/CAP & GOWN is a vision and goal driven program. We are very dedicated to what we are trying to achieve for our students. Why do you want to be a part of the STEM Summer Institute? What is driving you to dedicate extra time during your summer "off" to our cause? *
Being a STEM Summer Institute teacher can be a time consuming commitment, especially during the summer months. You will be required to build and sustain relationships, help implement a rigorous curriculum, and work with fellow teachers to ensure that all of our students' goals are reached. Please describe a scenario in which you have gone above and beyond to attain a certain goal? Please include SPECIFIC examples.   *
The success of the STEM Summer Institute relies heavily on the ability of our teachers to motivate and invest students. The summer months make it difficult for students to remain focused on their goals; however, the students are extremely driven, so with good motivators, big time steps CAN be made. Please describe examples of how you motivate people or your students. *

For teachers who have done STEM SI before, anything you'd like to see done again, removed, or improved upon?
Any teacher-friends you'd like to recommend for this program who I should encourage to apply? (if so, give their contact info please)
