Beach Naturalist Program Volunteer Interest Form

Hello! Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Beach Naturalist program. Our program is full for 2024. If you are interested in being on our 2025 interest list, please read through the details included below and complete our interest form. If you have any questions, please include them in the form or reach out to us at beachnaturalist@seattleaquarium.org.

Interested in volunteering with the Seattle Aquarium sooner than 2025? Email us at salmonjourney@seattleaquarium.org for opportunities with the Cedar River Salmon Journey program! We appreciate your interest and look forward to connecting with you!

Program Overview

  • Since 1999, Beach Naturalist program volunteers have been sharing what they know about life in the intertidal zone with Puget Sound communities at local beaches from Shoreline to Federal Way. Together, they help create fun and meaningful opportunities for people of all ages to connect with our nearshore environment and learn about the ways we can care for and protect these important habitats.
  • Programming will run May through early August, 2024. Volunteer recruitment begins in January 2024.

Volunteer Information

  • Volunteers are at the heart of the program and make all this great work possible! We appreciate your interest in joining our community of amazing volunteers 😊.
  • No prior knowledge or experience is required. No matter if you want to begin learning about what makes our beaches so awesome or if you’re already passionate about them, we would love for you to join us!
  • Volunteers receive 20 hours of training, March through May, and learn about beach biology, the importance of salmon, tools for connecting with audiences, and much more! Trainings take place at the Seattle Aquarium, on the beach (at multiple locations) and virtually over zoom.
  • Once trained, volunteers sign up for three, or more, beach shifts. Beaches include Richmond Beach in Shoreline, Carkeek, Golden Gardens, Olympic Sculpture Park Pocket Beach, Charles Richey Viewpoint and Lincoln Beach in Seattle, Saltwater State Park in Des Moines and Dash Point State Park in Federal Way.  Shifts range from 3-5 hours.
  • Youth volunteers between 8-17 years of age are welcome and must enroll with a participating adult volunteer.

After submitting your registration form, you will be placed on our waiting list for 2025.

Thank you!
