TOPIC: Modeling of Structural Systems - Practical Applications to Structural Engineering
SPEAKER: Tim W. Mays, Ph.D., P.E.
CREDITS: 4 continuing education credits will be provided by FSEA
TIME: Sign-In (please arrive early) 7:30 am -7:45 am
Breakfast & Live Presentation 7:45 am - 11:15 am
PROGRAM:
This course is a one of a kind practical overview of the modeling requirements for buildings in accordance with the 2015/2018 International Building Code (IBC) and its referenced material standards (e.g., AISC, ACI). The course begins with a detailed overview of the provisions governing the modeling approaches permitted for building systems, the rationale for their use, and current practice as utilized in the United States. The remainder of the course could be simply titled “How do we model that?” since the example driven portion of the course presents simplified hand modeling approaches, approximate solutions for quick checks, and state of practice approaches including the appropriate use of beam, plate, and solid finite elements. This course is not software program specific. Example applications included in this course include: modeling lines of resistance and designing for the resulting actions (steel/concrete/masonry), modeling foundation elements (and when not to), “maximum force delivered to the system” applications, flexible/rigid/semirigid diaphragm modeling, modeling of elevated slabs subject to concentrated loads, modeling to meet material standards, what to do when the code doesn’t provide modeling requirements and much, much more. Each design example includes an overview of applicable code provisions, a discussion of appropriate analysis and design requirements, determination of key system demands, and design of select example elements contained in the building’s load path.
Approximate Course Schedule & Program
7:45 – 8:30 Introduction to modeling (codes/standards)
8:30 – 9:15 Modeling of various structures and foundations
9:15 – 10:15 Modeling of miscellaneous structures
10:15– 11:15 Modeling of lateral force resisting systems
Please note that although adequate theoretical background is given during the course, those wanting a more developed understanding of the applications (with more examples) should definitely purchase the optional course text.
SPEAKER:
Timothy Wayne Mays, Ph.D., P.E. is President of SE/ES and a Professor of Civil Engineering at The Citadel in Charleston, SC. Dr. Mays previously served as Executive Director of the Structural Engineers Associations of South Carolina and North Carolina. He currently serves as NCSEA Publications Committee Chairman. He has received three national teaching awards (ASCE, NSPE, and NCSEA) and both national (NSF) and regional (ASEE) awards for outstanding research. He is the recipient of the 2009 NCSEA Service Award. He is a prolific speaker who participates in code development and his areas of expertise are code applications, structural design, seismic design, steel connections, structural dynamics, and civil engineering aspects of antiterrorism.
