Vision: An ecologically healthy river that people take pride in, enjoy and care for.

Purpose: Facilitating a collaborative network which promotes and advocates for the regeneration of the whole of the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River.

The purpose of the organisation will be charitable and specifically will be:
3.1 To plan, establish, maintain and operate the overarching vision and purpose of our Society and to
engage in any other activities which the Society considers will further the Vision and Purpose of the
Society for the benefit of the community/group/organisations and the public in general, including:
3.1.1. To advocate for the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River, and the land adjacent to the river, as an
ecological and recreation focus of the local communities running from the headwaters at
Cashmere Stream and the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River through to the Avon Heathcote Estuary/
Ihutai.
3.1.2. To work with Papatipu Rūnanga to reflect their values for the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River, and
support the historical values of the river as a source of food and a place of occupation for
their whānau.
3.1.3. To promote the establishment of a broad and continuous natural corridor with specific regard
to enhancing water quality and indigenous biodiversity.
3.1.4. To promote through education and public awareness, the cultural, recreational and
community values of biodiversity, water quality and a healthy environment.
3.1.5. To connect with neighbouring communities and with similar networks within
Ōtautahi/Christchurch.
3.1.6. To work cooperatively with the community to achieve the following outcomes which align
with our Vision and Purpose:
a) A vibrant, effective and strong network.
b) Functioning and thriving terrestrial and aquatic ecological corridor.
c) Increased abundance and access to, and use of mahinga kai.
d) A river recognised and valued as a destination for recreation, within a sustainable
economy.
e) A river that can be walked and a network of cycling, art and sculpture trails exists.
f) Contaminants are controlled at source.
g) Flood management is adaptive and has wide community acceptance.

3.2 To provide opportunities for the community and the public in general to work and support the
society’s principles with the aim of promoting an ecologically healthy river that people take pride in,
enjoy and care for.

3.3 To do all such things described the Objects of the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network as included in
this application, as are incidental or conducive to the attainment and furtherance of the above objects
and any other charitable purposes under New Zealand law, which the Society deems desirable.
