Summer 2024 Maryland Biological Stream Survey Training and Certification Registration
Summer 2024 MBSS Training will be held at Bowie State University on May 28-31. 

This form is to be used for summer training registration. Training is a total of four days, and you may register for the whole event or just for the days that interest you. Continental breakfast will be provided daily. Lunch is NOT provided, but is available at dining facilities on campus as well as restaurants off campus (or feel free to pack your own). Chest waders are recommended for the days that include field demonstrations. Further training details will be sent following registration.

The summer training registration deadline is May 1st.

Training costs $75 per day for 1-2 days or $200 for 3+ days (bulk discount!!!). 

Payment for MBSS certifications will be made AFTER completing the required audits. (Scheduled after training)

  • Day 1: (28 May 2024) – Fish Crew Leader and Physical Habitat Assessment Certifications
    • MBSS training and certification overview
    • Fish sampling protocols presentation and field demonstration (a)
    • Physical habitat assessment protocols presentation and field demonstration (b)
    • Taxonomy review – fish, crayfish, and freshwater mussels
  • ​Day 2: (29 May 2024) – Open Taxonomy Review
    • ​Crayfish/mussel taxonomy presentations
    • Fish taxonomy presentation
    • Amphibian/Reptile taxonomy presentation
    • All day taxonomy review – fish, crayfish, freshwater mussel, and herpetofauna
  • Day 3: (30 May 2024) – Open Taxonomy Review and Exams
    • Herpetofauna taxonomy exam 
    • Crayfish/mussel taxonomy exam (d)
    • All day taxonomy review – fish, crayfish, mussel, herpetofauna
  • Day 4: (31 May 2024) – Fish Taxonomy Certification
    • Fish taxonomy exam (c)

​(a) Required for Fish Crew Leader Certification. A field audit is also required to complete this certification

(b) Required for Physical Habitat Assessment Certification. Each applicant will be required to undergo a field audit during training.

(c) Required for Fish Taxonomy Certification. A field audit is also required to complete this certification.

(d) Required for Mussel Taxonomy Certification.
