This form allows you to describe an internship position for Computer Science students at the VUB. The Internship is a period (usually 2 months, but we are flexible) during which a student goes to a company to perform some work and learn something of academic value. Then, the student writes an internship report, that is evaluated by a board of professors at the VUB. The student then obtains a grade.
Most students do their internship between their first and second Master year. They will therefore most often have completed a Bachelor in Computer Science at the VUB, and one year of Master. However, to be on the safe side, we only describe the Bachelor in Computer Science in "Profile of the students" below.
The person of contact between the companies and the students is Denis Steckelmacher (Denis.Steckelmacher@vub.be). He was an intern during his studies, and now supervised two intern students, so he knows both sides of internships. Feel free to send an email if you have questions about how to open an internship position at your company, or what the VUB students are able to do.
Profile of the students
- Master students in their first or second year
- They have had theoretical courses on mathematics (including formal logic and statistics), computer systems, human-computer interfaces, algorithmic design, object-oriented programming, software engineering, computer networks, web technologies and Machine Learning.
- The programming languages used at the VUB are LISP (Racket and other modern variants), Java, Scala and Python. Most students are also able to understand and write code in C++.
Purpose of the internship
- The internship is part of the education of the student
- Intern students are not paid
- But, in exchange for their time, they should learn something of engineering or academic value (a technology, a programming language, a methodology, the use of a particular software or machine)
- Intern students are not free labor and must not be coerced to overwork, or work under invasive or disrespectful management. It is however perfectly normal to expect intern students to be fully available for work during office hours, an internship is a full-time occupation.
Informally, the host company accepts that a student comes see what happens and learns things, and, in exchange for that, the student helps out wherever they can.
