Hindustani Rāga

The workshop focuses on the melodic aspects of rāga and the rhythmic conceptions of tāla cycles in contemporary North-Indian classical music, particularly in the Khyāla genre. The workshop includes a practical introduction to basic improvisation techniques and aesthetics of non-metered prelude ālāpa as well as the articulation between melody and rhythm in gata compositions. The workshop may also consider other main elements of Hindustani jazz fusion, as modal endo-harmony and arrangement. Open to all instruments and voices.

Turkish Makam

The workshop introduces participants to the practice of makam composite melodic progressions (seyir) and usul rhythmic cycles in contemporary Turkish Classical and Popular music. The workshop proposes an analytical/practical study of makam music through the mechanisms of Taksim instrumental improvisation. The microtonal aspect of Makam temperament also opens possibilities to modal endo-harmony in fusion experimentation and arrangements. Open to all instruments and voices. Please note that there might be some limitations for tempered keyboard instruments.

Pan-Balkan Dance Music

The workshop approaches contemporary Pan-Balkan music through the combination of Makam melodic frames, Western triadic harmony and compound asymmetrical Aksak rhythmic patterns. The improvisation/composition approach relates to periodic undefined forms relying on a permanent feedback between musicians and dancers. Like traditional jazz, Pan-Balkan music has its own melodic-harmonic vocabulary as well as its own phrasing and ornamentation codes. Open to all instruments and voices.
