We are looking for songwriters who live within a one-hour drive from the Tri-Cities, Washington area and want to take on the challenge of giving voice to someone else's experience with cancer. This is not a songwriting workshop -- you will be writing a song FOR the participant. However, it is important that they feel you have captured their message/story/voice. Solo artists are the best fit, but we are willing to consider duos who feel passionate about the project.
Our goal is to facilitate thoughtful matches between patients (we call them participants) and songwriters. In order to do that, we want to provide you with the information you need to make sure you will be a good fit for the project. We also have some questions for you. To start, here are some important details about the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Project.
If you are selected, here are our expectations for you:
1. Participate in a songwriter orientation.
2. Meet with your participant 2 to 4 times.
3. Write an original song based on your interview(s) with your participant.
4. Share drafts of the song with the participant and a few select members of Great Blue Song Project. Listen to their feedback, and if necessary, make edits to your song. (Note: If you have a hard time being flexible with your songs, this project will not be a great fit for you).
5. Submit your completed song to us in the form of an informal (but good quality) video.
6. Provide one or more photographs of yourself to be used for promotional purposes.
7. Share content of the process with us so we can share with our audience.
8. Perform the song for the participant and their family/friends at a "house concert" or similar event.
9. Perform the song at one larger community event.
Here is what you can expect from us:
1. Training in our songwriting process, including how to ask good questions and how to cope with difficult emotions.
2. Emotional support. Working with participants who are experiencing cancer treatments is not easy.
3. Technical support. Our songwriting process is collaborative and we are here to help.
4. Conflict resolution. Just in case you and your participant (or others involved in the project) are having trouble communicating.
5. Marketing and event planning.
6. A $200 songwriting stipend and shared royalties. We recognize that many of you rely on your songwriting abilities to survive. We are a nonprofit, but one of our values is to pay musicians fairly. If you are selected, we will work out the details of song ownership, licensing, and other project expectations in a formal agreement.
7. The next phase of the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Project is to professionally produce and record your song. We will work out the details of the second phase with you at a later date.
