"In higher education, students are becoming more and more financially stressed for a wide variety of reasons. Routinely, finances are cited as one of the top reasons for students dropping out of school, as well cited as a major contributor to poor mental health. At such a large institution, students often feel uncertain about whom they can turn to get their questions answered and feel supported in the process. However, when asked students say academic advisors are some of the people whom they would feel most comfortable talking to about any financial stress they are facing. Often, though, advisors are not effectively prepared for these conversations as it is not their background. How can advisors best support those students even if they are unable to answer specific financial questions?
For this program, advisors will learn about the current state of student financial wellness across higher education, including data on basic needs security and specific struggles related to students who are also parents. From there, advisors will have the opportunity to learn how to effectively communicate with students with financial questions. This includes being supportive and avoiding judgment. Advisors will also learn about the resources that are available to all students. Finally, advisors will be able to ask questions and provide comments regarding financial wellness."
