NYS TESOL and Bilingual-Multilingual Interest Section (TESOL) are inviting you to contribute questions for a panel discussion inspired by an article titled "Multilingual Mysteries: Should we expand or diminish the role of assessment for multilingual learners" (published by Center for Applied Linguistics:
https://www.cal.org/cal_blog/multilingual-mysteries-should-we-expand-or-diminish-the-role-of-assessment-for-multilingual-learners/). In the article, the author wrote:
“If we shift our view of assessment to reflect a teaching and learning paradigm, can we then broaden the reporting of what our students can accomplish?”
While progress has been made in fostering innovative inclusive classroom practices to build on MLLs’ complex and dynamic literacy skills, equity-oriented education for MLLs will remain elusive unless we continue to work toward dismantling persistent deficit narratives embedded in the current assessment paradigms. To examine the intersections between equity and assessment for multilingual learners, NYS TESOL is hosting a panel discussion featuring the following speakers (by the alphabetical order)
Dr. Laura Ascenzi-Moreno (Associate Professor and Department Chairperson
Childhood, Bilingual and Special Education, Brooklyn College)
Dr. Luciana de Oliveira (Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies and Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University)
Dr. Jamie Schissel (Associate Professor at University of North Carolina at Greensboro)
Dr. Aída Walqui (Director, Teacher Professional Development Program, WestEd)
We cordially invite you to be part of this collective efforts by contributing 1-3 questions you would like to see them included in the panel discussion.
The panel discussion will be held in Tuesday, September 6, 4: 00 - 5: 00 PM (ET). Register here:
