NHS Amendment Review & Vote
Each member should carefully read through the amendments from your chapter bylaws. At the end, please answer the question to vote. Remember: 2/3 of the 80 active members in our chapter MUST vote to make any changes. Article VII: Activities                                                       Section 1: The Executive Committee shall determine the necessary fundraising projects each school year.  All members are expected to participate in all fundraising activities in lieu of membership dues.                                 Section 2: In addition to the monthly chapter meeting, all members shall regularly participate in service projects, tutorials, and any additional service requirements as decided by the Executive Committee.  Each member is required to complete twenty service hours per semester (10 each quarter).                                                                              Section 2 A: Members will be allowed to roll-over service from a summer recess preceding the school year to fall quarter one of the concurrent school year. 1.  Rolling hours can continue from a previous quarter to an immediately subsequent quarter between semester one and semester two of that same year.                                                                                             2. Hour amount may fulfill no more than one-third (2.5 hours) each roll over quarterly or five hours per semester for the current school year.                                 3. The service requirements and roll over will end on the final day of the current school year.                                 Section 2 B: Service Qualification:           Activities, projects, or events that are appropriate for service credit must be uncompensated. Pre- approval by the chapter advisor for independently discovered community service projects before service is mandatory.                                                              1. Compensation includes: grades, points, educational hours, required or mandatory jobs/ roles/ hours for membership recognition in another program, money, or membership affiliation-obligation.                 2. Uncompensated includes: above and beyond required or mandatory jobs/ roles/ hours for another program, completing the service on your own time at lunch, before, or after school and weekends or holiday breaks.                                                                                        3. If a member has concerns or questions about qualification for service, contact a designated officer for either our NHS Chapter or your leadership for the other program about requirements.                           Section 2 C: [pandemic amendment 2019-2020]1. With the Stay-At-Home Order chapter turns to virtual, non-contact types of service.                                    Options include:                                                                        a. Use your voice to spread appreciation, public service message, encouragement.                                   i. Card or Letter of Appreciation/ Slides or Video of Appreciation (teachers, administrators, hospital departments, nurses, doctors, essential workers and companies, mail workers, food distribution workers, faith leader-organization, Friends of Foster Kids, and or younger students in neighborhood)                               ii. Rainbow Connection Art Project on front door or front window of a house to encourage neighbors or those driving through. Hearts for Health Care and Chalk the Walk Encouragement campaigns work too. b. Policy Advocacy: communication to legislators about ordinances, laws, and policies related to student life, community needs, etc… (business letter or email, researched opinion/ solution, and practice your English skills)c. Helping at home/ church/ mosque:                             i. helping siblings with homework.                                  ii. responsible for childcare since a parent works. (childcare (MI law) dictates under the age of 12. Member fulfils a need in the home said parent would otherwise have to outsource.                                              iii. helping neighbors with food, cleaning, shopping, etc…(social distancing practiced of six (6) feet.              2. Relaxation of Requirements                                          a. Official quarter service sheet collection will revert to semester.                                                                              b. End of semester collection, formally two (2) weeks prior to end. May 31, 2020 for all active members via email to service officer.                                                          c. Twenty (20) hour service requirement relaxes to fifteen (15) since chapter projects like  lunch tutoring, Eggstravaganza, fundraisers/ charity drive other than online, and bake sales are canceled.                                   d. In order to maintain diversity of service, members should try to participate in a minimum of three (3) different types of service activities. (Examples: sibling childcare/ sibling tutoring/ voice of encouragement; voice of encouragement/ policy Advocacy/ helping neighbors with shopping; making masks/ sibling tutor/ voice of encouragement; or any variant of service types).                                                                                          3. Flexibility of normal limitation for service hour accumulation for one event is four (4) hours is lifted.    4. Verification of Requirements [two (2) forms of verification if preferable for each service]                                a. Photo record of service in progress or completed project                                                                                          b. Official signature of facilitator (for social distanced human contact—if necessary but not recommended with SAHO)                                                                                5. Submission of Service Requirements                              a. Testimony [one (1) overall for semester service].             b. Parent Signature for entire sheet.                                c. Use paper printed pdf of service sheet from nhsshhs.weebly.com                                                               d. Submission via one email to service officer [email (s) on Weebly]                                                                            i. Service Hour Record Sheet w/ verification signatures                                                                                   ii. All photo documentation                                                1. Service completed prior to March 13, 2020 does not require more than the normal service verification.          iii. Above & Beyond will still run as per normal chapter requirement- award                                                               vii. Roll-Over will remain the same as per normal chapter procedure                                                                 Section 3: This chapter shall publicize the chapter membership, four pillars, projects, etc… in a positive manner either through newsletter, NHS bulletin board, school website, and/or approved electronic   media.                                                                                      Section 4: All chapter activities will have the following characteristics: fulfill a need within the school or community, have the support of the administration and faculty, be appropriate and educationally defensible, and be well-planned, organized, and executed.                                                                                          Article VIII: Meetings                                                                            Section 1: This chapter shall hold the monthly chapter meeting on the first Thursday of each month.  Members will be notified of deviations from this schedule by the Executive Committee.                                        Section 1A: [pandemic amendment] A monthly chapter meeting will be held on the first Thursday of each                 month virtually. Virtual means through an online meeting forum such as Zoom, WEBEX, or  Microsoft Teams.                                                                              Section 2: This chapter will hold the meetings in accordance with a form of “Roberts Rules of Order”, Parliamentary Procedure, or some other recognized form of Order.                                                                  Section 2A: [pandemic amendment] This chapter will hold meetings in accordance with a form of   “Robert’s Rules of Order” : voting will take place using verbal and/or visual raising of hands, response in the online format chat, or through Google Forms as a formal and tallied vote. (2/3 majority needed to pass) *
