As you start preparing for your child's baptism, here are the canonical requirements for Godparents:

1) At least 16 years old (exceptions may be permitted by priest)

2) Baptized

3) Confirmed Catholic

4) Received the Eucharist

6) Living an upright life (e.g. going to Sunday Mass and married within the Catholic Church if married)

7) No penalties (e.g. left the Church, etc) Therefore, a Catholic who has left the Catholic Church cannot be a sponsor and cannot be a "Christian Witness" if they join another Christian communion.

8) Cannot be either parent
