Instructions To The Monitor/Evaluator

The candidates shall be provided with a facility in which to perform this skill.
The candidates shall be informed as to where the search operation is to take place.
A "victim" (mannequin, dummy, or someone serving as a victim) shall be placed inside the structure for the candidate to find during the search.
The candidates shall work as a team with one being the lead firefighter and one being the backup firefighter as designated by the evaluator.
The candidate's vision shall be obscured. (ex. Turn hood around)
The candidates shall be given the instructions below before beginning the exercise.

Instructions To The Candidates

The candidates, having a known victim located inside a structure and working as a team, shall demonstrate a primary search operation with 100% accuracy.

Select Candidate *

Lead Firefighter - 8 Steps *

1) Wears full PPE

2) Works as a team and maintains communication

3) Searches on hands and knees

4) Starts search along an outside wall

5) Uses standard right or left hand search pattern

6) Searches around and under furniture, closets, pantries, shower stalls, etc

7) Occasionally pauses and listens for sounds of distress

8) Locates and removes victim

Backup Firefighter - 9 Steps *

1) Wears full PPE

2) Works as a team and maintains communication

3) Searches on hands and knees

4) Follows the lead firefighter and stays toward the center of the room

5) Maintains physical contact with lead firefighter

6) Sweeps towards the inside of the room

7) Searches around and under furniture, closets, pantries, shower stalls, etc

8) Occasionally pauses and listens for sounds of distress

9) Locates and removes victim
