ADULT ED- A Christian Vision for the Arts
The purpose of this class is not merely to become good readers of good books, as important as that is. Rather, we will learn to appreciate the role of the arts in evoking the imagination to allow for the possibility of belief, which can also open the eyes of faith as we look at Scripture. Think about the historical narrative portions of the Bible, the psalms and proverbs, and all the hymns and metaphors littered throughout: the Bible is itself a masterful work of art. This seven-week class aims to consider the apologetic importance of the imagination through the arts, especially literature. We will learn to avoid “using” art for propaganda or instrumentalization––but learn to engage the arts on its own terms and why that matters. A selection of children’s books will be read and discussed in class to apply what we have learned together. We look forward to learning with you!
