Description of program
The workshop will consist of two parts: calligraphy and movement inspired by it. The elements of movement arising from brush practice will be translated into movement using the entire body in the second part of the workshop.

First, Yukina Yamamoto will host a workshop which introduces the basic practice of calligraphy strokes. This practice allows you to understand the fundamentals of calligraphy strokes using your body and your brush movement. Together, let’s investigate the fundamentals of brush writing using sumi ink. At this calligraphy workshop we will not practice Japanese characters. We will practice only the techniques of japanese calligraphy stroke.

After that, in Tuuli Malla’s workshop experiences of a hand moving a brush will be translated into movement across the body. We will experiment with calligraphy’s approach of applying pressure and using time, using parts of the body and the whole body as a “brush”. At the end there is an improvisation where participants dance on a large paper on the floor using sumi ink. A collective art work will be created on the paper.

Note for participants: Black sumi ink will be used at the workshop which does not come off from textiles. You can wear black clothes which you don’t mind getting ink on, or alternatively wear white and have the possibility of also using their clothing as a canvas.

No previous experience of calligraphy or Butoh / dance is required.

NOTE:
- Sumi-ink stains stay on the fabric. Recommend wear black cloth or white cloth can be painted with sumi-ink
- Calligraphy workshop is organized by sitting on the floor. If you have difficulty sitting on the ground, please let
us know in advance. We will arrange a chair for you.
- This Calligraphy workshop will NOT practice Japanese words. It is about practicing / greeting basic calligraphy
  stroke skills.
- The end of the workshop, there is a session dance with sumi-ink. We recommend bringing your own towel to
wipe yourself. *Unfortunately shower room is NOT available.
