In recent years, the Counseling and Psychiatric Service at Georgetown University (CAPS) has made significant strides, such as lowering costs to $10 per psychotherapy session and $15 for psychiatry sessions. However, CAPS, like most college counseling centers, is a short-term service. Students who need prolonged intensive care are referred out into the DC area. Although students are required to have health insurance, the costs of high deductibles or co-pays prove to be obstacles for students who are seeking care. The Student Mental Health Fund was established in February 2016 in order to provide support to students with financial difficulties. However, since then, the Fund has been rapidly depleting. This proposal calls for the expansion of the Student Mental Health Fund and its conversion to an endowment, which would generate funds each year. With university and alumni support, we can ensure access to therapy for people who are seeking treatment but who do not have the financial means to support themselves.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students nationwide. 46.2% of college students reported feeling depressed, 14.4% seriously considered suicide, and 9.5% engaged in self-harm this year alone, according to the National College Health Assessment. These numbers have steadily increased over the last several years. Student mental health is becoming a crisis and we need to need to come together to address it.
