About the project: The Mural Project will honor our Japantown history, and persons who made a difference in the survival and vitality of our community. The Mural will be created on the Geary Boulevard wall which has stood blank and nondescript for decades. The Mural will bring beauty and color to Japantown. It draws attention to our community’s determination to build Japantown in the face of exclusion and racism and the significance of Japantown to Japanese Americans. We hope that this project will trigger more public art projects to express diverse views in our community.
Objective: The Mural will enhance the Peace Plaza’s attractiveness, educate the public via interactive technology, and increase interest in visiting Japantown. Our hope is that the Mural will draw patrons to our small businesses, hotels, and restaurants that have suffered much through the pandemic. It will enliven the community and show our community pride.
Do you have mural elements to suggest? Elements can include historic places (e.g., Benkyodo Confectionary), peoples (e.g., picture brides), symbols (e.g., Pride rainbow flag). A list of proposed mural elements can be round here. These elements can be amplified with a QR code that connects to a website or new content or augmented reality. Suggestions for elements, including amplifying content with a QR code, will be accepted through this form and via email at sfjacl@yahoo.com until midnight, Monday, April 3. Due to space constraints, not all suggested elements will be included in the final design. However, please feel free to give an extensive explanation why an element should be included. Thank you, in advance, for your understanding.
