SPEECH AND DEBATE COURSE DESCRIPTION

Our award winning Speech and Debate program is an excellent choice for students who like:
1. to argue are concerned about key issues affecting our society OR
2. are looking to enhance their public speaking skills.

Speech and Debate is one of the most rewarding and beneficial educational activities available to students.  This course will help students gain valuable skills in several areas.  The course is designed to help students develop more confidence in communicating with others both in large groups and interpersonally.  In addition, it will help develop academic skills essential to high school and collegiate level work.  Students will also learn to conduct academic research, think critically through problems, listen analytically to arguments, understand current social and political issues, and develop writing skills. Ultimately, this is a course about how to articulate your thoughts and ideas in a well-developed and effective spoken format.

No experience in speech or debate is necessary. All are welcome to apply!  Students should only complete this application if they have a desire to be in Speech and Debate at Gordon H. Beatty Middle School.

Extra-Curricular Activity:
Students who take the Speech and Debate Elective will participate in five Speech Tournaments throughout the Orange County Debate League.  Students are chosen to participate for competitions in teams of three.  During these competitions, parents provide students with their transportation to and from the event.
