The first 4-6 weeks of introducing your cats to a new environment is critical for their safety. In order to help them learn where their new "Home Base" (and food source) is, you will need to keep them in an enclosed building/kennel during this transition period so they don't run off. Some examples include a covered dog run, an old shed or barn, or a hay loft with a door! Just someplace that the cats can call their own, with all their supplies (food, water, litter box), but they aren’t able to get out of! Do you have something like this on your property?If not, tell us about your property and we may be able to help provide enclosures. *

Do you understand that barn cats are unfriendly, feral to semi-feral cats? They are not suited for indoor only life and may never become friendly with you or anyone else. Attempting to handle these cats without the proper equipement (humane traps, etc.) can be dangerous, to include bites and scratches. Providing food, water, and shelter is required for the cat(s)' lifespan. Vet care may be needed over time. Do you understand humanely trapping these cats and transporting them to the veterinarian will be required? All cats in the barn program will be adults. No kittens will be given as outdoor pets. The color and gender of the barn cat you are matched with is at the discretion of the Humane Society of Scott County staff. *
