Writing Disability: An OwnVoices Resource to Respectful and Accurate Diversity
Hi! My name is Katie Thies and I'm a writing student at the University of Illinois. I was a contributor in PROJECT CANVAS a few years ago and it has gotten me thinking- is there any comprehensive resource for those writing disabled characters? Even as a disabled person myself it would be wonderful to have an OwnVoices compendium of real, diverse experiences.

If you are interested in contributing, please fill out the form below and I'd be happy to get in contact with you!

Finally, I understand that disability as a topic is a subject of a lot of debate and if you feel I have worded any of these questions/comments incorrectly do not hesitate to reach out. This is a project of learning and collaboration and my last wish is to unintentionally cause harm!

Less-intuitive questions
For this project the intent is to make it entirely OwnVoices- e.g., the authors actually experience the marginalization they write about. If you have a disability you aren't comfortable writing about in addition to the ones you are okay publicizing, you are under no obligation to include it below!

Secondly, I acknowledge that diagnoses? Really hard, really expensive, nice to have but suckish to acquire. If you are self-diagnosed it's no problem, just mark it in the 'other' category.

Preliminary ideas for organization consist of a collection of articles, and while that isn't set in stone yet ideas are very welcome! These could be ideas for article topics (My Experience With ---, The Lack of Disabled Models, Important Things to Not Overlook, etc) or organization plans or... really anything. This project is in early stages. Anything goes.

As for a writing background, as this compendium is directed primarily at writers, some people may be more equipped to serve that audience than others. If you don't, it's completely fine! Writing about your own experience, even when you aren't framing it in a writing-resource way, can be nothing but valuable. We're all here to learn, and hopefully, our readers will too.

Finally, they social-media section. If you don't have any of those don't feel left out, they're all optional fields! Some of you may already be a part of the book/writing community, some of you may not, but we aren't here to exclude on the basis of clout.

Have you been diagnosed with the above disability(s)? If not please mark it in the 'other' category and, if you feel comfortable, provide background. *
Idea dump here! :) *
Do you have a writing background? If not it's completely fine, just want to make sure everyone has the resources they need. *

Thank you for your interest! I'm ecstatic to get this project off the ground, and I can't wait to get in contact with you.
If any of this info changes in the duration of this project, or you find yourself in need of anything relating to this (time? help? whatever?) please reach out to me and I'll do my best to assist and address the situation. We've all been there before. Sh*t happens, and the last thing you need to do is worry. <3
