Introduction: Welcome to this Sunday's Gospel lesson and the first Sunday of Lent! The first Sunday of Lent's Gospel reading is always about Jesus' temptation in the desert. We see in the Gospel that Jesus is driven into the desert by the Holy Spirit and spends forty days being tempted by the Devil. During that time, the Devil presents Jesus with three temptations, and Jesus refuses each one. While Jesus encounters these temptations, he is also comforted by angels sent by his Father in Heaven. Following his forty days in the desert, Jesus begins his ministry of preaching about the Kingdom of God. Let's take a minute and read the Gospel lesson on page 3 of your Good News Weekly and then listen to a short video below. And don't forget to look for the four hidden animals in the Gospel picture.

Great job! So what does it mean to be tempted? Temptation is when we have a strong urge to do something wrong. If Jesus had trusted the Devil that would have been wrong. Instead, Jesus puts his trust in God. Jesus believes that even if some things are hard, God our Father wants only good things for his children. Jesus knows that God is faithful to him and Jesus is faithful to God. The forty days of Lent invite us to grow as Christians and to show our belief in God's promises, just as Jesus did. God promises to be with us, protect us, strengthen us, forgive us, love us and share life in Heaven with us. During Lent, we are led by the Holy Spirit to remember the vows of Baptism in which we promised to reject sin and to follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was ministered to by the angels, God also supports us in our struggle against sin and temptation. We succeed because Jesus conquered sin once and for all in his saving death on the cross.
