Grading Policy
The following scale will be used for calculating your child’s grade:

Tests                                       55%
Quizzes & Assignments           45%
Textbook
Each student will be given access to the online textbook.  Additionally, there will be a classroom set of textbooks, so students will have access to a textbook in class.  Students may check out a textbook but supply is limited.
Attendance
Attendance is imperative.  This class will move fast and there will not be class time available to cover previous day’s material.  Please encourage your child to be in class every day and to be on time.
In-Class Assignments & Homework
This is a math class and there will be an assignment almost every day.  Some assignments will be due at the end of the period and some assignments will be given for homework. Homework assignments are due the next day, at the beginning of class.  At times, students will be given the opportunity to begin or complete homework assignments in class. These opportunities are not optional and refusal to attempt assignments when instructed to do so will be considered direct insubordination.

All assignments, including homework, quizzes, and tests, are to be completed using a wooden, or mechanical, #2 pencil.  Assignments must include the student's first and last name, class period and date of the assignment.

Additionally, all work must include all the relevant steps required to solve each problem.  This is not a class on mental math, and the response, “I did it in my head,” will not be accepted.  Any assignment that is missing relevant steps will not be accepted and be subject to the late work policy described on back of this page.

Late Work
The late work policy is as follows for the first nine weeks only.  After the first nine weeks, no late work will be accepted

Ten points will be deducted each day an assignment is late.

Extenuating circumstances or long term absences will be handled on a case by case basis.

Retesting
A student may retest if they score below a 80% on a test. Students have 1 week to retest. Before retesting the student must complete a "ticket to take it" assignment, attend a tutorial session and must have parent notification paper signed.  Students can score a maximum grade of 80% on a retest.
Tutorials
Students are encouraged to attend tutorials whenever necessary.  During tutorials, students may receive help on a topic he/she does not understand, get help on a topic missed during an absence or school activity, get help correcting a failed test, or do other make-up work.  Someone from the math department is available for tutorials every day before and after school.  Tutorial schedules are posted in classrooms, online, and in hallways throughout the math department.
B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device)
Alvin ISD adopted a BYOD policy in 2012 to support technology integration into the 21st century classroom.  Although electronic devices are allowed in the classroom, the use of the device is at the teacher's discretion.  I will integrate technology into my lessons, but electronic devices will not be necessary on a daily basis.
Required Supplies
The following supplies are required to be brought to class each day:

1. Wooden or mechanical #2 pencil
2. Composition Book, Spiral or Binder
        3.     Map Pencils
        4.     Kleenex of Hand Sanitizer
        5.     Expo Marker
        6.     Calculator (Minimum 4 function with trig and inverse trig functions)
        7.     Compass (optional)
        8.     Protractor (optional)
        9.     Ruler  (optional)

Here are some organizational tips (not required):

If using spiral notebooks, use two. One for notes and one for homework.  It makes studying easier and your notes stay much more organized when you’re not constantly ripping paper out of them to do homework on.

If using three ring binders, try to use same binder for multiple classes and transfer notes from each class to a three ring binder at home for that specific class after each test. That way, when you need to study for a semester or final exam, you have all your notes for each class in their own binder.

Mechanical pencils are nice because you never have to sharpen them, just make sure you have extra lead and use a block eraser.  The eraser on the mechanical pencil will not last long. 0.7mm lead is used by most people, but if you tend to break pencil leads, try a 0.9mm.

You read above that all work is required to be done in #2 pencil; however I encourage the use of colored pencils and highlighters in your notes, and to enhance drawings and graphs in assignments

Skyward
Parents and students will be given access to Skyward, the online gradebook, in order to keep track of graded assignments, quizzes and exams.
